Chapter 11 - Memory Lane

The boys were back on the road after Luke pulled Bo out of the bar; needless to say Bo was not going to drive for the rest of the day. They had wasted about 2 hours there; the time was now 1:26pm; that’s what the dash read.

"I'm perfectly fine to drive Luke," Bo told his cousin.

"Yeah sure," Luke replied as they pulled away from the bar headed back onto the highway.

"How long are we going to drive?" Jesse asked.

"It's a 2 day drive to that damn lake, what do you think," Bo remarked.

"It doesn’t mean we got to drive straight through," Jesse said with a pause, "does it?"

"Why not, the longer we drive the faster we get there," John said.

"And the faster we get back home," Bo said as he settled into his seat for a nap, "don't wake me."

Clark at the time was ignoring everyone, oblivious to what was going on around him he just stared out the window. He missed home, he missed his friends, he missed most of all, his mother.

Back at the farm...

"At least you've not lost your touch for farm work cousin," Luke Sr. told Jonathan.

"I was always a hard worker cousin," Jonathan replied.

"No, you weren't" Luke laughed as he picked up a bunch of hay with his pitch fork.

"I was too," Jonathan said leaning on his pitch fork.

"Must I remind you of the great Duke Farm fire," Luke grinned.

"That was an accident, I was just trying it," Jonathan said.

"Bo you were supposed to be doing what we're doing now, not lighting up," Luke said as he started to chuck hay again.

"It was one time and I didn't even like it, I coughed so hard I dropped it and started that small tidbit of a fire," Jonathan resumed as well.

"You tell Clark?" Luke asked.

"No, and I don't plan to," Jonathan replied, "you ever tell your boys about Georgia Sue Miller?"

"NO, NO..." Luke looked at his cousin, "NOOOOOOO WAY, never going to cousin."

"Boy was Uncle Jesse angry," Jonathan laughed.

"It was an innocent accident on my part," Luke reasoned.

"I suppose, I mean how were you supposed to know she was a working gal," Jonathan winked.

"I didn't know!" Luke protested.

"Then why did you never tell your boys?" Jonathan asked tossing hay at Luke.

"Because I didn't think, 'oh by the way did I ever tell you the night I accidentally picked up a hooker?' would be an appropriate father son’s talk," Luke said tossing the pitch fork at Jonathan, "here you can finish up; I'm taking me a break."

"Not without me you ain't," Jonathan said letting both pitch forks drop to the ground and following Luke out the barn.

As they headed to the house Luke asked, "how you think the boys are?"

"Well we ain't got a call from the highway patrol so I think we're ok," Jonathan answered.

“I don’t Bo, seems to me your boy wouldn’t let no Highway patrol get in his way,” Luke said to Jonathan.

“Which one,” Jonathan smirked at Luke.

Luke paused for a minute, “come to think of it, neither one… I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”

“Well with Clark, I’m sure it be a good thing… Bo… you tell me,” Jonathan sat down on the house steps.

“A bad thing I think, not because he’s a bad boy, but… well you know,” Luke leaned on the steps railings adding, “maybe we should have gone with them,” Luke looked down at Jonathan, “you know, to spy on them.”

“Clark would catch us so fast you wouldn’t be able to sneak around him,” Jonathan reminded him.

“There wouldn’t be any windows he could toss me through so I think I’d be safe,” Luke laughed.

“I was a bit shocked to see that, to see him get so mad he could do what he did to Bo,” Jonathan said remembering the fight that happened in the living room.

“He was messed up, scared, angry… they both were,” Luke sat down next to Jonathan.

“Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea after all,” Jonathan sighed.

“Dang it Bo, we were worried, then we weren’t, now we are again… these boys are gonna age us so fast we’ll be white haired like Uncle Jesse in a year,” Luke exclaimed.

“Speak for yourself old man,” Jonathan said getting back up and running to the General. I feel like a drive,” Jonathan smiled.

“Now how’s it gonna look if the Sherriff’s cousin-in-law got arrested for speeding?” Luke asked.

“Like old times,” Jonathan replied.

“Can’t argue with you there,” Luke said running to get in to the passenger side, “the General still gots its kick,” he added as he got in.

Jonathan did one of his old Bo shouts, and they were off leaving a cloud of dust behind them.
