Chapter One

April 22nd

“Jonathan,” Martha greeted as he came into the kitchen for breakfast, “there was a letter in the mailbox yesterday for you, I was so busy taking care of that produce order Lex put in, that I completely forgot about it,” she added as she handed the letter to him.

After a few minutes Martha looked up at Jonathan who was just sitting there, with a look of devastation on his face.

“Jonathan?” she asked walking over to him, “what is it? What’s wrong?”

He replied, “My uncle Jesse… he died,” then put the letter on the counter, got up, and walked out to do the morning farm work.

Martha picked up the letter and read it:

Dear Bo,

It’s been a long time. I’m sorry I didn’t write you after you left, except those 3 times, but you really hurt us Bo. You, Luke, and me, and Uncle Jesse we was a family, and you got up and left on us. But to top it off, when Luke and I wrote you, you never wrote back. So we stopped. Figured you had gone back to your old life and done forgot about us.

And I’m sorrier to tell you, Uncle Jesse died last month. I wanted to write you when it happened, but Luke… well, he said you wouldn’t care. He still hasn’t got over you leaving like you did. You was a brother to Luke and me. But I couldn’t not write and tell you anymore. For two reasons, 1) I really thought you should know, and 2) Well Uncle Jesse left you some stuff in his will. Not much take you, you know how Uncle Jesse was…

Sorry had to take a moment there; this letter has got me crying. I miss him so much Bo. And I, we miss you.

Uncle Jesse left you a letter, and some belongings. I talked Luke into coming with me, down to Smallville where you live, to give them to you in person, as Uncle Jesse wanted. I’ll tell you, Luke aint happy about old Uncle Jesse pulling a thing like that on him. We will be there on the 23rd, should be about day after or two from when you get this here letter. I can’t wait to see you Bo. And I know Luke misses you, even though he won’t admit it.

See you soon.

You’re Cousin,

Daisy

“Mom?” Clark walked into the kitchen, “mom?”

“Oh, sorry Clark, I didn’t hear you come in,” she said putting the letter into her produce apron pocket.

“Are you ok?” he asked.

“I’m fine, why?” Martha replied.

“Because you look like something’s bothering you, and I was just outside, and dad has that same look on his face,” he told her, “so what’s going on?”

“I think you should ask your father,” Martha answered, “but not right now, give him a few hours, and wait until after school. Now hurry up, time for you to get yourself there,” she smiled at him.

Clark smiled and gave her a kiss, and off he ran to school. But he had every intention of asking his dad when he got back home what was going on. He was worried; he hadn’t seen them like that since, well since he had gone to Jor-El, and went into space. So it had to be something big.

In the barn Martha had gone to talk to Jonathan about the letter. She had known he had gone off to live with some relatives when his dad and he had that big falling out, but he never spoke much of it. She found him sitting in the barn looking at a box full of pictures.

“Jonathan,” she walked over to him.

“I… should be working,” he started to put the pictures back into the box, but stopped him, and took the one he had in his hand. It was him, another around his age, an older man, and a girl.

“This them?” Martha asked him looking at it.

“Yes, Luke, Daisy, and Uncle Jesse,” Jonathan stood up and started to cry, “he died… he died and I never got to see him again, I wanted to, I just, I couldn’t, I didn’t know… I turned my back on them… I…” he buried his head onto Martha’s shoulder and she just hugged him.

Outside the barn Clark had ease dropped on them… he didn’t see his dad cry often, hardly ever, but when he did, he hated it. He hated for his dad to feel that way. And now he wanted to know who these people were. But that would have to wait until after school, and then he took off again for real.
