22/06: Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Jonathan was out in the field, Clark was at school, and Martha was in the house when Jonathan heard that horn. He stopped the shovel he held mid air as he heard that Dixie horn blaring with the sound of the engine.
He turned around and expected to see the car he had cared about just as if it was another member of the family. The same car that he decided he wouldn’t fight Luke over. He had left it to Luke, after how he left; he couldn’t take the car from him. But instead it was another car that had the same horn the General Lee had, had.
Jonathan put the shovel down, and stood there for a little while. He saw his cousin’s for the first time, since he left the farm when he was 23. Daisy got out of the car, and then Luke got out on the other side.
Martha came out of the house, all smiles, and ready to welcome them.
“You must be Luke, and Daisy, how nice to finally meet you,” Martha shook their hands.
“You must be Bo’s wife, he was always getting the prettiest little things,” Daisy told Martha.
“Thank you,” Martha replied, taking that as a compliment.
“How’dya do,” Luke said.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you,” Martha began, “your a important part of Jonathan’s life.”
“I reckon that’s what you truly believe…” Luke began.
“Luke!” Daisy snapped at him.
“Daisy, my, you haven’t changed,” Jonathan stood there now, behind her.
“BO!” she turned around tears coming to her eyes, “OH BO!” she grabbed him, and hugged him as if he had died, and come back to life. Which, in a way you could say was true, “oh how I missed you!”
“I missed you too Daisy,” Bo… Jonathan told her. She seemed to hold onto him for a few minutes before letting go, and stepping back to look him over.
“This pretty lass here has got you looking handsome as ever,” she exclaimed.
Luke had walked on over into the house with his and Daisy’s bags as Martha had took him in while Daisy and Jonathan had reunited. She came back out to tell them to come in as well.
“Come on in,” Martha told Daisy, “Jonathan and I have been waiting anxiously for you to get here.”
Luke made this grunt noise.
“Luke!” Daisy scolded again.
“I forgot a bag in the car,” Luke walked back outside walking past Jonathan without as much looking at his shoes.
“He’s… he really does miss you Bo, he’s just…”
“It’s ok Daisy. ‘Bout time Luke and I had a talk, you two stay in here,” Jonathan walked outside as Luke was headed back, but Jonathan stopped in front of him.
“Don’t,” Luke warned.
“Luke… please… it’s been such a long time,” Jonathan told him grabbing Luke’s arm who tried to walk around him...
“Let go Bo,” Luke told him.
“No,” Jonathan said.
“I aint gonna tell you again Bo,” he waited a second or two.
“Luke please, let’s talk,” Jonathan didn’t remove his hand.
Luke let the bag he held in his right hand, and swung at Jonathan knocking him down.
And that’s what Clark saw as he came up running to the house. Now he didn’t know who Luke was, except what his dad told him the night before, and an old picture he had seen. But this man he saw punch his dad, and knock him down, wasn’t facing him. So Clark grabbed him, and the next thing Luke new he was in the air, heading towards a haystack, slamming through it, and through a fence post that was next to it. Clark began to head over to Luke ready to get him again.
“Clark!” Jonathan got up quickly, “wait, don’t!”
Clark stopped as Luke got up.
“Are you ok?” Clark asked his dad.
“I’m fine son… meet my cousin Luke,” Jonathan told him.
Luke was brushing the hay off his clothes, “what have you been eating son.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know… I just saw you…”
“It’s alright, I reckon I’d do the same… no I know I’d done the same had it been Uncle Jesse someone was knocking down,” Luke held his hand out.
Clark shook it, and stepped back, “I’m sorry dad.”
“It’s ok son,” Jonathan told him, “go on inside, your mom’s in their with my cousin Daisy.”
Clark again apologized being the Clark we all know so well, and headed inside.
“Luke, I don’t want it to be like this, please…”
“Don’t Bo. This IS how it is. And it’s all you’re doing. You made your bed Bo, now sleep in it,” Luke pushed passed Jonathan got his bag and went inside.
Jonathan stood there and watched him walk off. This was going to be a very long, long visit.
