22/06: Chapter 7
Chapter 7
When Jonathan and Clark got back, Clark went inside first, to tell his mom that he had found his dad, and he was fine. Jonathan on the other hand went to the barn. He saw a light on and thought perhaps he had left it on earlier. It was around 8pm, earlier in the afternoon all the fighting and arguing that had gone on, made time fly by, as well as a few hours with Clark talking in the cave. He had told Clark a few stories about how he and Luke were always running around in their car, The General Lee. Clark asked him what happened to it, but Jonathan had no idea.
When he walked into the barn, he didn’t see anyone, so he went over to switch the light off, when he saw Luke sitting up in the Loft.
“Didn’t know you were in here,” Jonathan looked at him.
“I’ve been in here the last 2 hours or so,” he replied.
“Well… turn the light off when you leave,” Jonathan turned to leave.
“Bo,” Luke called out, Jonathan stopped and turned back to face Luke.
“What now Luke,” Jonathan was tired of fighting.
“We should talk,” Luke spoke as he came down the stairs.
“I think we’ve both talked enough today,” Jonathan replied starting to turn away again.
“I’m sorry Bo,” Luke suddenly said. Jonathan stopped, but didn’t turn around. He kept his back to Luke.
“I’m sorry I was so angry at you for leaving when you did…but damn it Bo, you was like my brother. You didn’t even ask if I wanted to come with you,” Luke told him.
Jonathan turned around, “come with me?”
“I would have, for a while, had you asked,” Luke said.
“You wouldn’t leave Daisy and Uncle Jesse like that,” Jonathan told him.
“For a few weeks I would have, I could have gone with you, one last trip in the General, the both of us,” Luke spoke, “and when you left, I was so mad at you, so when Sally May came, I agreed with her out of spite, it was just a bad time to catch me.”
“How could you do that to me Luke, how could you keep my own son away from me?” Jonathan asked him.
“We missed you Bo, and we didn’t know how to deal with you not being there. We thought we would wait ‘til after she had the baby, and then we’d call you,” Luke explained, “but then when she had him, and named him what she did, we didn’t want to see him go either, we couldn’t let another Bo go on and leave us.”
“Does he know about me?” Jonathan asked.
“He does, we didn’t lie to him, when he was old enough, we told him about his momma’s decision to not tell you, and how we agreed with it, and if he wanted we would contact you,” Luke replied.
“I guess he didn’t,” Jonathan said, more or so asking.
“He’s wanted to, but he was scared, he doesn’t know anything other then living in Hazzard,” Luke told him, “I think he was scared that if we did contact you, he’d have to leave all he knew behind.”
“I would have let him stay if that’s what he really wanted,” Jonathan said.
“I’m sorry Bo, everyday that passed I knew it was another day you would never forgive us for, Uncle Jesse worried about it too,” Luke stood up, he had been sitting down on a bench.
“I would never have kept a son of yours from you,” Jonathan told him.
“I know Bo, I’m sorry, I really am. I’m sorry for being so angry with you, but in a way I think it was what I needed to justify to myself that what I was doing was ok; when I knew it wasn’t,” Luke held his hand out, “I am sorry.”
Jonathan looked at Luke’s hand, could he shake it, and end this fight. He looked at Luke, and then threw a hard right hitting Luke in the face.
“That was for being mad at me when I left,” he walked over to Luke who wasn’t trying to fight back, not even trying to protect himself, Jonathan punched him in the face again.
“That was for agreeing to keep my son from me,” Luke just took the hit and stumbled back, he was now against a wall. Jonathan hit him again. Then again, and again, and again, and again tears coming down his face. Luke finally after in a way thinking he was getting what he deserved, punishment for what he did to Bo, finally grabbed Jonathan’s arms, and held them back, so he couldn’t hit him anymore.
“I’m sorry Bo, I’m sorry,” Luke grabbed Jonathan in a strong hug, letting his arms go, Jonathan not hugging him back at first, but then he finally gave in and hugged Luke back. It was like getting a brother back from the dead. For 8 years they had been like brothers. And for 20 years they had not seen each other. 20 years had gone by, they had lost 20 years of friendship. 20 years of family lost.
“Do you forgive me too Bo?” Daisy came up behind them. Jonathan let go of Luke and looked at Daisy. He didn’t say anything he just hugged her as hard as he could without hurting her.
“I’ve missed you Bo,” she told him crying. Luke was standing there next to them. All 3 of them had, had a huge burden lifted from their shoulders. They were once again, Bo, Luke, and Daisy Duke. All that was missing was…
“I wish Uncle Jesse was here,” Jonathan said as he still had Daisy in a hug, before letting go and stepping back.
“He’s here Bo, he’s here,” Luke told him.
Where else would Jesse Duke be but with his boys, and best girl?
“We got a lot of catching up to do,” Jonathan told them.
“Well then, let’s get started!” Daisy exclaimed smiling, one arm around Luke, the other around Jonathan as they headed out of the barn. And as Clark dashed back to the house before he got caught listening in. He hadn’t been purposely snooping. He had gone out to see what was keeping his dad. And saw them talking. Saw him hit Luke, almost going in and stopping it, but for some reason didn’t. He was glad he hadn’t, they might not have worked through their problems.
There still was hurt, but it was now starting to heal.
