22/06: Chapter 10
Chapter 10
“How is being a brother turning out to be,” Chloe asked Clark as they sat in the torch.
Clark shot her a look.
“I see, that good hu,” she smiled.
“He doesn’t like me, and I don’t like him, and if he don’t like me, my cousins don’t like me either…” Clark told her, “4 against 1, in any other case, that would be fine…”
“Like what?” Chloe asked.
“Nothing, I mean I can’t pick a fight or anything, my dad wouldn’t like it,” Clark told her, almost letting his secret out. He still hadn’t told Chloe. He sometimes thought she knew, and other times, wasn’t sure. And sometimes, he just didn’t know what to think.
“I got to hand it to your parents, especially your mom,” Chloe told him.
“Why’s that?” Clark asked.
“Finding out your husband has a biological son from another woman, when she isn’t able to have kids,” Chloe told him.
“Chloe!” Clark snapped.
“I’m sorry Clark, I didn’t mean it in a bad way, just… you know,” she apologized.
“Yeah well, I got to go, dad wants me home right away,” Clark headed out.
“Good luck Clark,” Chloe called out.
Clark headed out of the school, he hadn’t taken the truck today, he had ran, he felt the run would do him good. He made sure no one was around before he ran, and he was about to run home when he heard that horn (General Lee’s horn).
“Well look what we got here,” Bo* pulled the car up next to Clark, “get in.”
“I rather walk,” Clark responded. Luke* got out of the passenger car through the window, “we weren’t asking… cousin.” He put his hand on Clark’s shoulder and guided him to the car. Clark threw his bag into the backseat; at least all 4 of them weren’t together, and climbed into the car. At first having a little bit of trouble, which made Bo* and Luke* laugh.
“Where are we going?” Clark asked.
“We want to show you what this car can do,” Bo* told him.
They headed to a river stream, which was about 50ft wide. Except they weren’t on the ground level. They were above it, on a cliff.
“What are you doing?” Clark asked.
“Sit back and relax,” Luke* told him.
Clark didn’t know if he should blow his secret and stop them, but a part of him, wanted to see this. Wanted to be apart of this jump. Wanted to do something he knew his dad had done many times before once back in Hazzard.
“Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaw!” Luke* and Bo* both hollered as they hit the end of the cliff. The car flew through the air, and Clark didn’t know what to do. He looked out the window as they flew over the river. It felt great. It was like he could fly…. To bad Jonathan saw them.
Jonathan was about two football fields away when he heard the horn blow, and he hit the breaks on his truck and turned around to see the General Lee barley land on the other side. The back tires half off the end of the cliff to be exact. Bo* hit the gas immediately pulling the car completely onto the ground and swerving a 160 and stopping. Jonathan headed to the car, crossing the field going off the road.
“Woooo!” Bo* got out of the car, Luke* got out as well.
“That was another perfect jump Bo*,” Luke told him.
“Bo*, Luke*,” Jonathan… still a bit weirded out by hearing that name again, let alone calling someone else, let alone a son that, “what the heck where you thinking jumping that?” he demanded.
“That we found a new jump to try,” Bo* responded.
“You should never jump anything that high! Until you know at least you if you can make the length of the jump” Jonathan smiled remembering the days he use to do that. The river had been about 50feet below them, “I thought you were picking up Clark?”
“We did… he’s in the car,” Luke* replied. Jonathan looked at the car, Clark was getting out through the passenger side window.
“Clark! What were you thinking!” Jonathan angry at him, for going along with Bo and Luke.
“Dad…”
“Your mother would have a heart attack if she had been with me!” he scolded.
“Well you sure didn’t have a problem with it when you were doing it! Or when you thought it was just… them. I saw you smile, you liked what they did, until you saw I was in the car!” Clark argued.
“Clark,” Jonathan began….
“No. I don’t want to talk,” Clark grabbed his bag from inside of the car, and started to walk back home.
Once he got into the higher part of the field, he ran.
“Clark!” Jonathan shouted. The boys were already getting back into the General Lee.
“Get back to the farm,” Jonathan told him from his truck, then pulled away headed back to the farm as well.
He had been glad to see the General jump again, but seeing Clark in it, he couldn’t stop worrying just because he use to do it himself once. Even though Clark would have probably walked away without a scratch had something gone wrong. Probably would have saved Bo*, Luke* and the General had something happened. But Clark was still his son.
Jonathan pulled into the farm, where he saw Luke, Daisy, and Martha outside.
”Is Clark home?” Jonathan asked.
“How can he, he was walking,” Luke* said as they pulled up next to the truck.
“He’s in the barn… I think he got a ride…” Martha covered knowing Clark had ran home, “what happened?”
“We jumped that river down the road, Clark road in the back,” Bo* told her, “pop’s here,” Bo* said that in a way Jonathan wasn’t sure if he liked or not, “chewed him out for it.”
“Bo you done worse jumps then that if I recall,” Luke told him.
“That is different Luke, Clark is my son, he…”
“Sure didn’t have much of a problem with me jumping it, I guess you mean children you raised right,” Bo* shot at him.
“That is not true! Jonathan shot back, “you’re my son too.”
“You’re going to stand there and tell me you feel the same way about some kid you met yesterday, as the way you feel about the kid you raised? I don’t think so,” Bo* told him.
“Beauregard Duke!” Daisy shouted at him, “don’t talk to your father that way.”
“He is not my father. Uncle Jesse was, and Uncle Luke here is more of a father to me then he will ever be.”
“Bo*!” Luke shouted.
“No. He’s right. Why should he regard me as a father. I wasn’t there. Not by choice, but I wasn’t. I understand it,” Jonathan walked off to the barn to talk to Clark.
“Bo get inside now,” Luke said firmly.
“You heard him, I’m right,” Bo* answered.
“I said get inside now! Luke repeated. Bo walked off into the house, followed by Luke.* John, and Jesse had been watching from inside the house.
Jonathan didn’t know what to do about Bo*, or what to do about Clark. He was treating them differently, and he knew he shouldn’t. But he didn’t know how to treat them the same. He couldn’t.
“Clark,” Jonathan walked up the stairs to the loft, “we need to talk.”
“I don’t want to talk,” Clark told him.
“Well I do,” Jonathan stood in front of him.
“Dad please, can we not…”
“I’m sorry Clark,” Jonathan told him.
“Well if you insist,” Clark said liking the start of the way this was going.
“I know I shouldn’t act like I did with you. I use to do the same thing, but your different Clark, times are different. You can get into trouble with stunts like that,” Jonathan told him.
“I know we shouldn’t have, but it felt good,” Clark told him.
“I know, I remember,” Jonathan smiled.
“It’s something I can do fairly. It doesn’t use any of my powers. Racing, jumping, why didn’t you tell me you use to do that, why didn’t you tell me I could finally do something you did, and you could be proud,” Clark told him.
“Oh Clark,” he hugged him and held him, “I am proud of you. Don’t ever think otherwise. No matter what you do, I am proud of you, and I love you,” Jonathan told him.
“So what do you think your mother will say?” Jonathan said as he let go of Clark.
“About what?” Clark asked.
“Teaching you to race,” Jonathan smiled.
Clark put on the biggest cheesy smile he could manage. Finally, finally something he could do. He couldn’t do football, like his dad did, but now, now he can do something to relate to Jonathan.
“I think she’ll say boys and their cars,” Martha said walking up behind them, “I’m not going to say I wont be worried every time you get into a car and go speeds you shouldn’t, but I understand you need to do this,” Martha said.
“But we can’t afford a car right now Clark,” Jonathan told him.
“If I can get one, will you let me, no matter what, as long as it’s nothing illegal,” Clark asked.
Jonathan knew what he was talking about, but couldn’t tell him no.
“Remember Clark, part of this world is being fair with your car. Building it yourself, working on it yourself,” Jonathan told him, “keep that in mind, and yes, we’ll allow it,” he replied.
Clark put his cheesy smile back on.
“How is being a brother turning out to be,” Chloe asked Clark as they sat in the torch.
Clark shot her a look.
“I see, that good hu,” she smiled.
