Chapter 17

“So are you gonna send it?” Luke* asked his cousin Bo*.

“I don’t know,” Bo replied.

“What’s it say?” Jesse who was 8 at the time asked.

“None of your business pip squeak,” Bo replied pushing him as he passed.

“You don’t have to push him,” John said helping Jesse up, John was 9 at the time. Bo was 13, and Luke was 12.

The boys walked together down the Hazzard County square’s sidewalk. They were headed to the post office.

“Come on Bo, are you gonna get there and chicken out again?” Luke asked.

“So what if I do?” Bo glared at him.

“Just send it already,” John piped in.

“Yeah,” Jesse agreed, Bo glared at them as well.

“Do you think he would come?” Bo asked his cousins.

“If he did, would you go back with him?” Luke asked.

“No, I don’t know, maybe for a little while you know,” Bo stopped in front of the post office. Luke didn’t notice and bumped into Bo, and John bumped into Luke, and Jesse bumped into John.

“Geez man! Cant you guys watch where you’re walking?” Bo said annoyed.

“Well maybe if you all learned to walk,” Lewis Hatch mimicked as he grabbed Bo’s letter from his hand.

“Lewis you give that back now!” Bo made a fist.

“Jonathan Kent… Smallville…Kansas,” Lewis read, “who’s he?”

“None of your dang business,” John snapped.

“Give it back,” Luke told him.

“And if I don’t?” Lewis bullied.

“We’ll knock you down so fast you’ll think a car hit you!” Bo went for the letter, but Lewis being 15 was taller then Bo.

“Now, now, here I am trying to be a good friend and helping you mail the letter,” Lewis moved closer to the mailbox.

“Don’t!” Bo got panicked.

Lewis dropped in the letter into the mailbox.

“No!” Bo tried to get it but Lewis shoved him to the ground. Luke went up and swung at Lewis hitting him in the stomach.

“You little son of a…”

“You boys move on from there!” Old man Enders shouted.

“I’ll get you little brats, you just wait,” Lewis walked off.

“Luke… I got to get that letter back!” Bo tried sticking his arm in there but if he tried to get any further he’d get his arm stuck in there.

“Bo stop that, you’ll hurt yourself!” Jesse told him.

“Look, it’s passed 5, they won’t pick the mail up ‘til 8 in the morning. We can go home, and wait tile everyone is asleep, then sneak out here on our bikes, and find a way to get that letter out,” Luke said.

“Ok, then tonight…” he looked at Jesse, “and don’t you dare say a word of this to anyone!”

“I wont,” Jesse promised.

And that’s what the boys did. John and Luke waited until their dad was asleep, they lived with their mom, but spent that night at their dad’s who was living with their Uncle Jesse, and Bo, and then they woke Bo up who had fallen asleep. They told Jesse they would go get him, but decided not to. He was too little, and would muck everything up. They made sure Uncle Jesse was asleep too, if he caught them, he’d scold them good.

They got on their bikes and headed to town. They left at midnight, and it took them about 30 minutes to get to town on their bikes.

Those hills were murder to go up… fun to go down, but murder to go up.

“Ok, we’re here, now how are we gonna open this thing up?” Bo asked in a whisper.

“Did you bring the screw driver?” Luke asked.

“No… I forgot,” Bo replied.

“Oh that was smart,” John told him.

“I got one,” the boys all jumped when the heard someone speak, they turned and saw Jesse standing there with a screwdriver.

“Jesse!” Bo scolded, “what are you doing here?”

“I knew you guys would ditch me, so I came on my own,” Jesse answered.

“Are you insane?!” Luke scolded him as well.

“You could have got hurt,” John smacked him on the head.

“Ow!” Jesse said.

“Ok, ok, shut up, lets get on with this,” Bo said grabbing the screwdriver from Jesse.

The boys then took turns unscrewing screws from the mailbox. There were many to unscrew, and the boys took turns as their hands started to hurt. It took them about another half an hour to get into the mailbox, and Bo grabbed his letter. Seeing as it was around 1am, a little past 1am actually, they decided to shove the rest of the mail under the post office door, and leave the mailbox as it was, in pieces.

“Lets get back fast,” Luke told them.

“We’ll drop Jesse off first, since his house is closer,” John said.

“Alright, lets go,” Luke said, and they all headed off to Jesse’s.

Jesse put his bike quietly on the porch, and started to sneak back into the house when his dad opened the door.

“Boy you better have been sleep walking or abducted in the night, or your gonna be in for a good holler and punishment!” Enos shouted at him, “and you buys don’t even think about sneaking off!” Enos shouted towards the bushes were John, Luke and Bo were hiding waiting for Jesse to get into his house.

“Luke, and Uncle Jesse are on their way over here, you boys are gonna get a wiping you aint never had!” Enos told them as they came out of the bushes, “Luke and Uncle Jesse are hoping mad!”

Luke and John looked at each other, then at Bo, “next time you think of writing a letter… don’t,” John told him.
