22/06: Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Jonathan and Luke pulled up to the farm being at 7pm May 3rd. Jonathan and Luke had gotten up and had breakfast at the Bar / Grill they had gotten into the fight at… of course after making sure Grizzly wasn’t anywhere near there. Then they had proceeded to get the truck’s tire’s repaired, and then had lunch before starting for home. They stopped here and there for food, bathroom breaks, and gas.
So it was 7pm when they arrived. Martha and Daisy heard them and came out to greet them.
“Jonathan!” Martha said glad to see him.
“Bo! Luke!” Daisy said as she came out, she hugged Luke, “welcome back, both of you.”
Martha went up and hugged Jonathan, and gave him a kiss.
“You boys must be tired,” Daisy said.
“Yeah, I need a good shower,” Luke said.
“Martha, where is Clark?” Jonathan asked.
“In the barn,” she answered as she looked at him knowing what he wanted.
“Luke, why don’t you come in while Jonathan goes up and gets Clark from his loft,” Martha said walking Daisy and Luke to the house.
“We’ll be right in,” Jonathan said as he headed for the truck.
Jonathan walked into the barn, and sighed. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to say to Clark, but he knew he had to say something.
“Clark,” Jonathan said walking up the stairs.
“Dad,” Clark said; “how was your trip?” Clark asked smiling innocently.
“We need to talk,” Jonathan said sitting down on the couch next to him.
“I’m sorry you and Luke got into a fight with that guy,” Clark said, “I was going to stop it before anything happened, but… you looked like you were having fun… sort of.”
“So you saw the whole thing?” Jonathan asked, “and waited until after Grizzly had thrown me a few times to stop it?”
“Yeah well, Luke might have seen me…” he lied, “had to wait until I had a clear chance.”
“We need to talk about what you did Clark,” Jonathan said.
“I know,” Clark stood up.
“I know this is all real hard on you, it’s hard on everyone, but that’s it Clark. No more, I cant, I won’t let you start acting like I didn’t raise you better, you know better,” Jonathan told him.
“I just wanted to give you some time away from all of this,” Clark told him.
“I know, and that’s why you’re not grounded, but this is it, nothing more son,” Jonathan said.
Clark smiled glad he wasn’t going to be grounded.
“Now lets go inside, see what your mom has left over from din…” Jesse running into the barn and shouting from the ground cut him off.
“Clark! Un..Jo… uh,” he wasn’t sure what to call Jonathan. Jonathan was his uncle, but an uncle he had just met.
“What is it Jesse,” Jonathan said knowing Jesse didn’t know how to talk to him.
“It’s the hospital. They said we should get down there fast,” Jesse said. Jonathan and Clark looked at each other, then back at Jesse.
“What happened? What is it?” Jonathan said as he and Clark rushed down the staircase.
“They wouldn’t tell us, they just said to get down there fast. My mom, and Uncle Luke just left in her car,” Jesse said. They rushed out of the barn as Martha was rushing out of the house.
“Where’s John?” Clark asked.
“I don’t know,” Jesse looked around.
“Son you and Jesse find John, and head to the hospital in Jesse and John’s car. Your mother and me will go in the truck,” Jonathan said as he and Martha rushed into the truck.
“Be careful!” Martha said as they left.
Clark watched them drive off, as Jesse started to shout around on the farm for John.
“John!” Jesse shouted.
“John!” Clark shouted. Clark wasn’t going to waste time, and used his X-Ray vision. He searched the barn, the house, and saw him behind the house.
“John!” Jesse continued.
“You go that way, I’ll go the other way,” Clark told Jesse, and they each went around one side of the house. Jesse looking for John, Clark acting like he was looking, but already knew they would find John.
“John! Don’t you hear us calling you! We have to go,” Jesse said.
“No,” John said.
“What?” Jesse asked.
“I can’t go, I can’t, you go, I can’t go there, and listen to someone tell me my brother is dead,” John said.
“We don’t know that!” Jesse shouted at him.
“Why wouldn’t they say over the phone!?” John shouted.
“Doctors never want to say anything over the phone,” Clark said trying to calm him down, “we should just get over there.”
“No!” John said. Clark walked up to him.
“Get away from me,” John stepped back, but Clark was faster, and decked John in the face.
“Clark!” Jesse exclaimed.
“We don’t have time for this, come on, help me get him to the car,” Clark told him. He could carry John himself, but had to play the normal part. So he and Jesse both carried John to the car, and put him in the backseat.
“I’ll drive,” Clark said, and Jesse tossed him the keys.
“Lets go,” Jesse said.
[30 minutes before phone call to the Kent’s farm]
Bo was lying on his bed, his head turned to look at Luke, who still hadn’t woken up. Bo had spent every waking moment talking to Luke. About things in their past, about how he was sorry for what happened, whatever was on TV, anything and everything. The doctor told Bo that in his opinion Luke probably couldn’t hear him, and Bo told him where to stick that opinion. After that the doctor didn’t say anything.
Bo was about to turn the TV on, and the machines connected to Luke started to get faster. Bo got out of bed as fast as he could, his foot still in the cast, his left arm in a cast as well. They had to replace the cast both times Bo went hysterical. They told him he had to stop hitting people, and stay calm or his arm would never heel correctly.
“Nurse! Doctor! Someone!” Bo stumbled out of the room, “something is going on with my cousin!”
The nurses ran in there, and shut the door behind them. Bo waited outside the room, he wanted to go right in, but didn’t want to risk doing anything that would cause something bad to happen to Luke. He had already done enough of that.
About 10 minutes later, though for Bo, it seemed like hours, the nurses came out.
“What happened? How is he?” Bo asked.
“Go on in, and see for yourself,” the nurses said to him. Bo looked at them, and then headed into the room.
Luke was facing the door, and looked him in the eyes as he came in.
“You’re… awake,” Bo said a heavy burden seemed to lift of his shoulders, “god Luke; your awake.”
Luke didn’t say anything, he just starred at Bo, and Bo walked up closer to the bed.
“Luke… say something, please,” Bo begged.
“What happened,” Luke asked. Bo was taken back by the question.
“You don’t remember?” Bo asked.
“I remember you going after Clark, and your dad,” But I don’t remember much of anything else.
“There was an accident… I… I wouldn’t stop, wanted to hurt them, we crashed with a truck,” Bo said, “you tried to get me to stop and I wouldn’t,” Bo added, “god Luke, I’m sorry,” Bo’s eyes full of fear.
“I remember some of it…” Luke said, “I saw the truck… you wouldn’t listen,” Luke said as he was remembering.
“If I could take it back I would Luke, I swear it, on my mother’s grave, if anything happened to you… if you d…” Bo couldn’t say it.
“Well I ain’t dead, and don’t swear on your mom’s gave,” Luke said, “I feel like I was hit by a truck,” Luke said.
“Well… we were,” Bo said, “I’ve been here with you, talking to you,” Bo said.
“Yeah, I think I heard you, but not exactly what you said, but more like sound, your voice,” Luke told him.
“I’m sorry Luke,” Bo put his hand on Luke’s shoulder.
“Don’t,” Luke said. Bo pulled his hand back.
“No… don’t do this to me Luke…don’t’ hate me,” Bo’s eyes filled with fear and pain.
“I don’t hate you Bo… I just don’t want to look at you right now,” Luke said, “I cant.”
Bo felt like he couldn’t breath. He backed away from Luke shocked, scared, and stumbled out of the room.
“Bo!” Luke shouted, “don’t leave like this!,” Luke shouted. He couldn’t look at Bo the same, sort of how Jesse couldn’t really look at John the same, but he didn’t want Bo going and doing anything crazy.
“Nurse, did you call the Kent’s? Tell them to get hear immediately, don’t tell them why, but just to get here now,” the doctor told one of the nurses in charge of looking in and taking care of the boys.
